‘We have two cars ahead of you, ma’am. It’s going to be about an hour. Is that okay?’

I look around at the waiting area. It’s clean, tidy and there’s a drinks machine.

‘Yes, that’s fine. Thank you.’

I find a seat that looks reasonably comfortable and drop down into it. Flipping open the notepad, I look at the blank page intently. There were so many thoughts flying around inside my head when I was making breakfast and now it seems to be empty.

‘Is this chair taken?’

I look up, recognising the voice and am shocked to see Patrick standing there.

‘What are you doing here?’

‘I could ask you the same thing, but I guess it’s obvious. Tyres, or exhaust problems?’

I laugh.

‘Low hanging exhaust. I think I caught it on an exceptionally high speed bump. You?’

‘Four new tyres, but I’m booked in, thankfully. They’re still saying it’s going to be an hour, though.’

I frown. ‘That seems to be their standard response. I hope the hour doesn’t stretch into two. It’s a bit chilly in here.’ I wish I’d thought to throw on a jacket over my jumper.

‘If you are up for a short walk, there’s a nice little coffee place near here. I didn’t catch breakfast, so I’m starving.’

I chew the end of my pen, considering whether they’ll be more likely to get my exhaust fixed if they know I’m waiting. Out of sight might mean out of mind. Patrick is standing in front of me, a charming smile on his face. What harm can it do?

‘Okay.’

As we walk past the reception desk, the guy calls out, ‘It’s probably going to be more like an hour and fifteen. Sorry about that.’

I nod and glancing at Patrick he raises his eyebrows. ‘Guess we don’t have to hurry, then.’

It’s actually a little warmer outside than it is inside the waiting room. The sun is trying its best to shine through the low, grey cloud and now the early morning chill is finally beginning to lift. It feels strange walking along and idly chatting with Patrick. Today he’s in tired old jeans and a faded rugby shirt, and looking very relaxed. I remember that I only had time to run a brush through my hair this morning and I’m make-up free. Not exactly one of my best looking days, but it’s not like this is a date.

‘Quite a coincidence, meeting you like this.’ Patrick’s smile is warm. ‘A pleasant surprise, actually. Time always drags when you’re waiting around and an hour can seem like forever. Unless you have some interesting company, of course.’

He looks at me quizzically and I laugh. He’s looking for a reciprocal compliment, or at least reassurance he hasn’t barged in and upset my thinking time.

‘Well, I’m supposed to be brainstorming ideas for my next chapter, but inspiration is evading me this morning. So I guess I’m going to have to settle for second best.’

‘Hmm. Not exactly the response I was hoping for, but that’s the story of my life! This is it, what do you think?’

We stop outside a quaint looking little cafe.
