My alarm blaring wakes me up. Ugh! I hate mornings! I stumble into the bathroom, hoping that some warm water will help me feel human again. Wait, should I say feel mage again? Ugh, my life is too complicated.

I dress and look over to see Ana sitting on her bed and checking that her bag is packed and ready for the day.

“How are you so awake?” I ask, grabbing my bag and stuffing all the papers from my desk into it. “It was after midnight by the time we went to sleep.”

“I love mornings,” says Ana with a shrug. “The day is full of possibilities and new ideas. You ready?”

I nod and join her to walk to breakfast.

The others are more obvious than yesterday. I guess the guys’ presence kept some of the mean girls at bay. It’s easier to ignore today, though, knowing I’m on my way to coffee and food.

“Chris! Ana! Wait up!”

We spin to see Tallulah coming out of a room on the first floor.

“Good morning!” she says, linking her arms through both of ours and pulling us toward the door.

“Great, another morning person.” I groan as the other two girls giggle.

“So what’s your schedule look like today?” she asks.

“Mine is the same as yesterday,” says Ana. “I was hoping a few of those classes may disappear, but no luck. The amount of homework may kill me.”

“Hold up,” I say, stopping suddenly, “our schedules can change?!”

“Yep,” says Tallulah. “It doesn’t happen very often for us, but in the university, the classes change as you pick your major and the little kids will change as their powers come out.”

“So this means you didn’t read the handbook,” says Ana.

“With what extra time?” I whine. “I didn’t even have dinner last night trying to get work done and get caught up. At least today can’t be any worse than yesterday, right?!”

“Don’t challenge it,” warns Ana. “You never who may be listening.”

“Wait, are the walls spelled to spy on us?” I ask, feeling my eyes widen.

Ana and Tallulah both burst out laughing.

“No,” says Tallulah, “but you never know who may be listening and try to help you out.”

The other two girls make small talk and laugh and enjoy each other’s company. I try to follow along but mostly just get a few mhmm and yeahs in.

Before I know it, we are pulling open the door and entering the dining hall. I inhale the scent of syrup and something savory. My stomach lets out a loud rumble, announcing our arrival. Luckily, only a few people glance our way but turn back to their food. I guess our novelty has worn off for some people. Hopefully, that means the others will lose interest in us soon too.

We make our way along the buffet, filling our plates to overflowing before making our way to the far table and sitting around the middle.

“I’m going to have to stop eating like this or I’ll be the size of a house before I know it,” I say, grabbing a sausage link and biting it in half.
