In 1912, after being rejected by several popular music publishers, the song was published under the title “The Memphis Blues.” It is considered by many to be the first blues song to be published (although at least two other minor compositions titled as blues were published earlier that same year). It became an instant hit nationwide, selling over fifty thousand copies by 1913. Handy gained a huge following that established him and Memphis as important sources of the new musical style.

A. SCHWAB’S

163 Beale Street

Through more than a century and a half of change and upheaval, one Memphis business has remained unchanged: A. Schwab’s Dry Goods store on Beale. Opened in 1876 just up the street from its current location, it was still owned and operated by the Schwab family as late as 2011. It is the only original business still in operation on Beale Street and retains much of the flavor of old Beale, both inside and out.
