CHAPTER 37

Wu had seen the instant understanding dawn in Vega’s eyes. She had her soldier face firmly in place, and he couldn’t read her reaction to his idea.

“You want me to take Gloria’s place,” she said flatly.

All eyes in the room were focused on the exchange between the special agent in charge and his most junior agent. He’d rather have this discussion in private, but there was no time.

“We have other agents with more experience undercover, but we don’t need that kind of skill for this assignment.” He didn’t add that locating an agent who was female, Hispanic, available within the hour, and could pass as an exotic dancer would be a tall order on short notice.

Vega remained stoic. Her military background clearly made her hesitant to refuse what she would perceive as an order from a superior.

Flint, however, weighed in with his own concerns. “Whoever the unsub is, he has a lot of experience looking at women.” He motioned toward the psychologist. “Like Dr. Cattrall told us, he’s a voyeur. He’s watched videos of Gloria, and he’s been stalking her on the street. He’s also seen Vega. How could she possibly fool him?”

Wu had been wrestling with the same problem when the idea had first occurred to him. He addressed Flint directly, aware everyone was listening. “He’ll never see Agent Vega up close or in the light. We’ll sneak her into the club through the back door ahead of time. Then she’ll put on Ms. Gomez’s outfit and leave when she’s finished performing, taking the same route she usually does and leaving at the same time.”

Apparently unconvinced, Flint began to pick apart his argument.

“He’ll see her face.”

“It’ll be dark.”

“What if she walks under a streetlight?”

“She’ll avoid them.”

“Won’t he find that a bit strange?”

Wu was surprised when the Manhattan homicide detective chimed in. “She could pretend to get distracted and walk away from the direct light to check something out,” Robinson said. “And keep her head moving so he never gets a solid look at her.” When Flint cut his eyes to him, Robinson shrugged. “Worked undercover a couple years. Learned a few tricks.”

“I don’t walk like a dancer,” Dani said, finally speaking. “I’m not exactly graceful.”

She couldn’t have been more wrong. He would never say it out loud, but her physical attributes were among the reasons he’d thought of her for the assignment. Years spent conditioning her body had left her lithe and sculpted without unnecessary bulk to weigh her down. Combat training that incorporated martial arts had given her an economy of motion that appeared smooth and effortless.

“Actually, you are,” Wu said. “Although you might be more comfortable with the word ‘stealthy.’”

She had no retort, apparently considering his appraisal of her prowess. Now that he’d dealt with the objections, it was time to close the deal.

“You only have to fool him long enough for us to catch him watching you,” he told her. “Once we pick him out, it doesn’t matter if he doesn’t go through with it. We’ll tail him until we figure out who he is and take the investigation from there.
