CHAPTER 37
Wu had seen the instant understanding dawn in Vegaâs eyes. She had her soldier face firmly in place, and he couldnât read her reaction to his idea.
âYou want me to take Gloriaâs place,â she said flatly.
All eyes in the room were focused on the exchange between the special agent in charge and his most junior agent. Heâd rather have this discussion in private, but there was no time.
âWe have other agents with more experience undercover, but we donât need that kind of skill for this assignment.â He didnât add that locating an agent who was female, Hispanic, available within the hour, and could pass as an exotic dancer would be a tall order on short notice.
Vega remained stoic. Her military background clearly made her hesitant to refuse what she would perceive as an order from a superior.
Flint, however, weighed in with his own concerns. âWhoever the unsub is, he has a lot of experience looking at women.â He motioned toward the psychologist. âLike Dr. Cattrall told us, heâs a voyeur. Heâs watched videos of Gloria, and heâs been stalking her on the street. Heâs also seen Vega. How could she possibly fool him?â
Wu had been wrestling with the same problem when the idea had first occurred to him. He addressed Flint directly, aware everyone was listening. âHeâll never see Agent Vega up close or in the light. Weâll sneak her into the club through the back door ahead of time. Then sheâll put on Ms. Gomezâs outfit and leave when sheâs finished performing, taking the same route she usually does and leaving at the same time.â
Apparently unconvinced, Flint began to pick apart his argument.
âHeâll see her face.â
âItâll be dark.â
âWhat if she walks under a streetlight?â
âSheâll avoid them.â
âWonât he find that a bit strange?â
Wu was surprised when the Manhattan homicide detective chimed in. âShe could pretend to get distracted and walk away from the direct light to check something out,â Robinson said. âAnd keep her head moving so he never gets a solid look at her.â When Flint cut his eyes to him, Robinson shrugged. âWorked undercover a couple years. Learned a few tricks.â
âI donât walk like a dancer,â Dani said, finally speaking. âIâm not exactly graceful.â
She couldnât have been more wrong. He would never say it out loud, but her physical attributes were among the reasons heâd thought of her for the assignment. Years spent conditioning her body had left her lithe and sculpted without unnecessary bulk to weigh her down. Combat training that incorporated martial arts had given her an economy of motion that appeared smooth and effortless.
âActually, you are,â Wu said. âAlthough you might be more comfortable with the word âstealthy.ââ
She had no retort, apparently considering his appraisal of her prowess. Now that heâd dealt with the objections, it was time to close the deal.
âYou only have to fool him long enough for us to catch him watching you,â he told her. âOnce we pick him out, it doesnât matter if he doesnât go through with it. Weâll tail him until we figure out who he is and take the investigation from there.
