Chapter Eight

Suddenly, Zac jerked away, causing Randi to gasp and stumble. What had she done to make him stop? A flash of movement and the sickening sound of a punch against bone and flesh made her gasp. Zac stumbled backward. Will grabbed Zac’s arm to pull him back to his feet so he could hit him again.

Randi leaped at him and screamed, “Stop it! Stop!”

Will Cooke in a rage was roughly equivalent to a full-grown grizzly in a really bad mood. He outweighed her by seventy pounds and was deaf to her pleas. He struck Zac again, but Zac threw a punch of his own and made contact with Will’s jaw.

“Hold him!” Will yelled.

Movement out of the corner of Randi’s eye proved to be Karl.

“Don’t you dare!” she screamed at her other brother. He halted, looking between her and the continuing fight. “Stop them,” she begged, but he didn’t take a step.

Anger burning, Randi grabbed one of the lawn chairs, folded it and hit her oldest brother with it. He managed to knock the chair away but stepped back from Zac long enough for her to move between them. Both of them tried to maneuver past her to get at the other again, but she pushed against their chests. When Will attempted to set her aside, she’d had enough. She slapped him as hard as she could. The force of the blow made her palm burn.

Will staggered then looked at her as if he couldn’t believe she’d dare hit him.

Randi’s breathing came in heavy gasps, and she heard similar sounds from Zac behind her. “Stop it,” she hissed at Will, “or I swear I’ll punch you next time.”

Will massaged his jaw. “What’s wrong with you?”

Randi flung her arms out in exasperation. “Me? You’re the one flying out of nowhere attacking people.”

He shook his head. “Don’t you see? God, Randi, you used to be so smart. What happened to you?”

“Watch your mouth, Cooke,” Zac said through clenched teeth.

Randi’s eyes filled with tears. How had she so totally lost her brother to the spiteful man he’d become? “Let me guess. You think Zac is kissing me so I can’t think and see he’s a crafty arsonist right under my nose? That about right?”

“Something like that,” he spit back at her. He gave Zac a hard stare. “Did he tell you the things he said about our family? That we were a disgrace to our uniforms? That someday we’d get our due? Is this our due, Parker? Seducing our sister?”

Zac tried to get past her again, but she pushed against him, causing him to lose his footing in the loose sand and halting his progress.

“That’s low, even for you,” Will continued.

“Shut up,” Randi said, low and threatening.

Will stared at her like he couldn’t fathom who she was, like she couldn’t claim two IQ points. “I can’t believe you’re not suspicious. He’s been charged with arson before. And I don’t care that he was cleared. It was just fishy the way that woman changed her story.
