BELLA
I can’t believe this is happening. When I woke up this morning, sure I griped a little to myself about the cold drafty house and a myriad of other things I’ve been stressing over for the past four years. But had I wished this on myself? How can this be happening? Maybe I should ask the kids what they asked the fat guy in the red suit for when they wake up in the morning. Stranger things have happened.
“Don’t we need some kind of license for this?” I thought for sure I had him there, but I forgot I was dealing with a man who seemed to play by his own rules. I thought it was only on TV, and in the movies, that money jumped hurdles and moved boundaries, I guess I was wrong.
“Already taken care of little lady. And it cost me a nice bottle of my finest scotch. I’ll be expecting you to remedy that nephew at your earliest convenience.”
“Seeing as how I got you the last case I think that can be arranged.”
“Oh wait, she needs something blue and borrowed and old and…” His mom ran out of the room mumbling about doing things right and I was finally convinced that I hadn’t woken up this morning and I was still in the dream.
The dream became reality when his uncle said I now pronounce you man and wife and my knees almost gave out. His family actually congratulated us, like this was completely normal. I didn’t know what to do with myself after the nuptials and the toast, which his dad insisted on.
I sipped my fancy water, which was all I could keep down at this point and wondered what was happening with my life. “I have to go check on the kids.” I couldn’t get out of there fast enough. I needed to think, and I couldn’t do it down there. I should’ve known he wouldn’t let me go alone. He was right on my heels.
“I’m not going to nab them and run. I don’t have a car remember?”
“I want to look in on them too. Do they usually sleep through the night? I don’t want them to wake up and not know where they are.” It was on the tip of my tongue to say something catty, like he shoulda thought of that before bringing us here and holding us hostage, but I didn’t.
We snuck into the room quietly and walked over to Luna. She was fast asleep with her thumb in her mouth. “I used to sleep like that.” He ran his finger over her hair and I don’t know why the simple gesture should touch me so deeply, but it did.
I watched him out of the corner of my eye as he looked down at our daughter. There was a mix of love and uncertainty on his face and I wondered what was on his mind. Putting aside my own feelings, I had to admit this couldn’t be easy for him either. I can’t begin to imagine what he must be thinking or feeling.
