Chapter 12

Dianna had resumed practice when Stacy entered the studio. Thank goodness. It allowed Stacy to slide in unseen until she stood by Kevin. He glanced over at her, his gaze cool, then returned to watching Dianna.

“It’s...it’s hard to explain, Kevin,” Stacy said. She couldn’t conceive a believable excuse for that mess in the kitchen. Or the way they’d found her and Nic.

“I imagine it is.” Kevin didn’t bother to look at her.

“Besides that, I don’t have to explain. This is my house.” She let anger color her voice. “Regardless of what happened, I’m entitled to a life as much as you or Dianna, which should be none of your damned business.”

He hesitated, then nodded. “Point taken.” He turned to face her. “Can I ask what is between you and Nic Stone?”

“We...we’re friends. That’s all.” No matter how much she wished it could be different.

Kevin raised one eyebrow. “Friends?”

“Friends. He...he’s in love with someone else.” Her chest ached.

“I don’t trust him. I don’t like the way he’s treating you or the way he looks at Di.”

Oh, great. Now she had to deal with macho madness. “Well, I trust him, and that’s what matters.”

Kevin eyed her, his doubt clear. “Evidently, he’s made you believe that.”

“I know my mind.” It was her emotions she couldn’t control. Focusing elsewhere, Stacy watched Dianna execute her dance steps precisely. “She missed you a lot.”

“I missed her, too. Our fighting seemed so stupid once I had a chance to step away from it.” Kevin smiled. “I love her so much.”

Stacy had to force an answering smile. Poor Kevin. Poor Nic. One of them was destined to be very disappointed. “And everything went well in Denver?”

“Aside from all the confusion over whether there was really a fire in the Center or not, yeah, it went fine.” He shook his head. “You have to wonder about them. They insisted there had been a fire, but no one could find any sign of one. Weird.”

Stacy bit back a smile. “Yeah, pretty weird.”

The routine finished, and Dianna started toward them. “Oh, I need to warn you about something,” Kevin said quickly.

His tone made her stomach drop. “What?”

“I sort of promised Dianna a party instead of us going away for a weekend.”

“A party?” Panic raised its ugly head. “When?”

“Isn’t it wonderful, Stace?” Dianna ran to throw her arms around Kevin.

Stacy glanced at Kevin, who gave her a weak smile. “Is what wonderful?”

“The party we’re going to throw. A kickoff party for my tour. Kevin says we can invite everyone.” She stole a kiss from his lips.

“Oh, he did?” Stacy aimed an accusing gaze at Kevin, and he shifted uneasily.

“It will be a great promotional move,” he added.

“And when are we throwing this party?” Stacy asked, the dread muscling in beside the panic.

“Next weekend.” Dianna must have seen the expression on Stacy’s face, for she released Kevin and came to hug Stacy. “It won’t be a problem, will it?”

“Oh, no.” Stacy had put together parties at the house before. Just housecleaning to arrange, caterers to commission, invitations to be sent, details to arrange.
