Chapter 15

“WELCOME BACK, ZAHRA.”

Oya waved her over to the bench where she sat at the shore of a busy river bed. Boats, some empty, some not, bumped along the river. Zahra joined the goddess there, no longer the skeptic she was when she first arrived.

“Will I come to you every time I go to sleep?” She hoped not, but kept that from her tone.

Oya laughed and tapped her head. “Remember I hear all your thoughts, female.”

Zahra growled, so much for the lessons Imani taught her. “Well, you have to cut me a little slack while I learn.”

“How did your visit with Imani go?”

“She taught me how to build my mental shields.” She frowned. For all the good it did.

“I meant about the issue she’s having.” Oya shook her head smiling.

“Oh…that.” Zahra tilted her head. “There are people, kids really, missing in our area. According to rumors around town, they’re only recovering about half of them. Lady thinks they’re all connected to our tribe.”

Oya’s gaze sharpened. “Why does she think that?”

“She says she can’t locate missing people if they’re not connected to you. In this case, she’s been able to locate them all, though the vague images haven’t been enough to pinpoint where they’re being held and who’s doing it.”

“How are you going to help?”

Zahra sighed in remembered frustration. “Earlier this evening I tried to locate anyone connected to you. It was not successful.”

“The link with the first oracle was severed in such a traumatic way. I can locate the warriors, the shaman, but anyone else…they’ll need to physically reestablish their bond with you.”

Lord that could take forever. “Is there no other way?”

“Though Imani is blessed with my magic, she is a shaman, she’s more than likely using spells in order to find anyone connected to my power. There’s no other way.”

“What should we do?” She looked out along the river searching for ways to help Imani. She didn’t have control over her powers, and since she wasn’t completely connected with the tribe she had no idea what she could do to help.

“I’ll think on it and contact you when I have an answer. In the meantime, learning to use your power will help everyone involved.”

Zahra groaned. Oya was right, but nothing about it was easy. “I wished I’d paid more attention when my grandmother was talking.”

Oya laughed. “I’m sure it’ll come back to you. Couple that with the information I gave you, you have a good start.”

“After my mom died, I just….” She couldn’t speak past the lump in her throat and memories nearly overwhelmed her.

The goddess’s gentle hand on her shoulder brought her back. “It will be fine Zahra, I promise.”

A change in subject was needed. “Who are all the new people in my head?”

“They’re your warriors. They need training.”

“By me?”

Oya snorted. “Not hardly. That’s the Ijoye’s job. But convincing them to come to the safe house will be yours.”

“So I have to convince them to drive to South Carolina for training. How long will this training last?” Zahra thought about how abruptly her life changed and couldn’t keep the wariness from her voice.
