CHAPTER 15

RHYS

Without his command, Kat went straight to his office and sat in one of the matching leather chairs in front of his massive oak desk.

“Okay, so Emery can read minds,” she said as she folded one long leg over the other knee.

He shut the door behind them, and Kat waved her hand through the air, sealing the room from listening ears and prying eyes.

Rhys could immediately smell her magic, coppery and sweet.

“Does this mean what I think it means?” she said.

“What else could it mean?” He paced around the backside of his desk. He went to the giant circular window that overlooked the harbor across the street.

When he’d been forced from his home, this seemed like the next best place to put down roots. The land had still been untouched, but he knew being along a coastline would eventually pay off. For thousands of years, people had settled along waterways.

He’d been right of course. Now Second Quarter was one of the most lucrative sections of Saint Sabine, somewhat thanks to him. He’d built House Roman—the second House Roman—in the late 1700s. It now had one of the best views in Second Quarter.

Harbor lights glittered on the water. Yachts and sailboats bobbed in the marina, tied to their docks.

But Rhys wasn’t seeing any of that.

He had bigger problems.

“I’m truly lost here,” Kat said. The leather groaned as she readjusted in her chair. “How does Emery fit into a Ravenwood curse if she is what we think she is?”

Rhys turned back to the room. “I don’t fucking know.” He came around the desk and dropped into the chair beside Kat. He spread out his long body, the exhaustion creeping in.

“Maybe you should take her to Last Vale,” Kat said quietly.

He turned his head to her. “Are you fucking joking?”

“Think about it. What do you have to lose?”

“Emery was already in danger once in that tunnel. Now you want me to take her to the curse?”

Rhys could feel Kat analyzing him in that way only she could. She might not have been around as long as Dane or Ramses, but Kat had always taken the time to know him better, and right now, he was not acting like himself.

“Why do you care what happens to the girl?” Kat asked.

And there it was.

He was centuries old. There were hundreds of bodies in his past.

Why would one girl matter at all?

“What if taking her there somehow makes it worse?” he argued. “We don’t know what this means.”

Kat spread out her arms. “Worse than this?”

She was making it difficult to argue with.

“Okay, fine.” He got up. “But if this somehow goes sideways, I’m blaming you.”
