Wide-Eyed Learning

In that wonderful day you will sing: “Thank the Lord! Praise his name! Tell the nations what he has done. Let them know how mighty he is!

Disrupting the quiet of the diner, my children and I burst through the glass doors, and all eyes turned our way. Soon the cranky voice of my six-year-old daughter erupted: “Hey, they don’t have any balloons.” Later, she stopped coloring her place mat to whine, “They didn’t give me a green crayon!”

I pretend not to hear. But when the food arrives, she tastes the chicken tenders and proceeds to tell anyone who will listen that they are too hot. Finally, Riggs, who is three, starts screaming from across the table, “This isn’t chocolate milk! I want chocolate!”

Later I came to a sad conclusion: Grumbling is contagious . and my kids caught it from me. Determining to reverse the trend, I tried a new tack on a day dedicated to bathroom cleaning. As both kids watched, I said, “Thanks, Lord, for this warm, running water we have for cleaning.” You should have seen their wide-eyed stares.
