PART 4
CAN’T KEEP THE BLACK MAN DOWN
In the beginning my son took orders from Shawn well. He taught him all the intimate details of trimming the hedges and how to scale bushes to perfection. The next few days was more of a learning process and less actual work was being done. We aren’t just landscapers, we are artist. You have to learn how to be an artist as much as you have to learn to keep the grass trimmed. Bishop was falling in line with that, or so I thought.
Still, under the surface, something didn’t set right with the white boy. You see in the South there is always this hang up about color, my son being the epitome of that particular statement. We aren’t working for men and women, as much as we are working for a stereotype. It was all fine and good until Shawn asked Bishop to do one too many things.
Bishop was trimming the hedges and they ran out of mulch. Shawn asked Bishop to go to the store for mulch and all hell broke loose.
“That ain’t my job to go get no mulch. Daddy hired me to trim hedges.”
“It’s part of the job to get mulch. When I was in your position I got it and so did everybody else.”
“Man I ain’t gettin no damn mulch.”
“Bishop, with all due respect, your father hired me to run this ship, and I’m telling you to go get mulch.”
You can see the fire flare up in Bishop’s eyes. He walks across the lawn and gets in Shawn’s face and says……………..
“You want to run that past me again?”
“I’m the captain of this ship, and I’m going to need you to go across town and get some more mulch for the job.”
“Hell no.”
“F*ck you!”
Bishop hits Shawn in the face and begins beating him like a bulldog let off the leash. Without hesitating, all the rest of my employees make their way to the scene and pull Bishop off. Of course I hear about it, and have to stop doing paperwork to talk to my son. We meet at a local IHOP and discuss how much of a fool he had been.
“Why couldn’t you just go get the mulch son?”
“I’m tired of being that white boys slave.”
“Slave? All the men did the same thing he asked you to do. Shawn must have got mulch for me a million times. Are you saying that Shawn is my slave?”
“No….it’s just. Taking orders from him…..it’s……it’s hard.”
“And that’s life. We all have to do things we don’t like to do. Now, deep in your heart you know he didn’t do anything wrong. He told you to go get some mulch.”
“I know. I just have resistance to authority.”
“And how’s that worked out? Jail time and everything else to go along with it.”
“I don’t know. I just want to be the man.”
“And you will be?”
“How am I going to be the man with the golden white boy on my tail?”
“I’m grooming you to run my business. But every good leader has to first be a good follower.
