Ben opened the door a few minutes before six, revealing Kara glaring darkly at him. “You.”

“Whoa, déjà vu. I thought we moved past you being angry with me?”

She waved to the crate in her other hand. “This beast you created pooped in my tennis shoe!”

Ben coughed on a laugh, pressing his lips together. “How did he manage that?”

“Great aim?”

“No, I mean, weren’t you wearing your shoes?”

“Yes, I was wearing my comfy shoes that have never touched the pavement until today so they don’t scuff up the floors at the café. I leave the comfy shoes by the back door and swap them out when I come in. Then I drop the tennis shoes in my office so they are out of the way until I leave. I left him to play in my office with a litter box. I didn’t see the pile inside until I picked them up, and my fingers squished all the way up to my knuckle—”

Ben held a hand up. “I get the visual.” Ben squatted down to peer into the crate. “Were you a bad cat?”

The kitten meowed loudly, rubbing against the cage door. Ben took the crate from Kara and stood up. As soon as she stepped all the way inside and shut the door, Ben set the crate down and let the kitten out. The small orange cat sprang from the cage and immediately climbed up Ben’s pant leg until he pulled him off and set him on his shoulders. He rubbed his cheek against Ben’s, and Kara pursed her lips.

“He’s pretending to be adorable, but he’s plotting.”

“I don’t know about that. He’s never pooped in my shoes.”

“Good for you,” she mocked, making a face.

“I think you’re just hangry. Let’s get a couple tacos in you, and you’ll see that Chaos didn’t mean it.”

“Chaos?”

Ben grinned. “It’s what I’ve been calling him in my head, and it seems to fit, considering the circumstances.”

“You know, naming an animal is the first step in keeping it.”

“Now, don’t spoil my dinner. It’s better than calling him pain in the—ow!” Chaos had bit his ear, and he reached up to get him off his shoulder. “No more perch for you.”

“Please, you say that, but I bet he’s back up there in no time. Admit it, you’re kind of a softy.”

Ben opened his mouth to argue, but he liked the way she smiled at him, as if his feelings for Chaos endeared him to her.

“Think what you want, but there will be no more biting my ear tonight,” he said, setting the kitten on the back of his couch.

Kara went to his sink and washed her hands. “How exactly do you want me to help you in the bathroom?”

“I need to seal my shower and the back of my sink. I could do it by myself, but since you wanted to spitball ideas, I thought you could keep me company while I work.” Ben came up alongside her to wash his hands, too. “You want something to drink?”

“Sure.
