When Shelley got home Thursday night, Missy followed her into her bedroom while she changed her clothes. “Mom, our class is taking part in the citywide Winter Science Project, and we really need another parent sponsor. I told Mrs. Bickham I’d ask you.”

Shelley grimaced. She hated to refuse, but she was so busy right now. “Missy, I wish I could do it, but I just can’t take off any more time from work than I’m already doing.”

“It won’t be during the day. It’ll be at night.”

Shelley carefully hung her suit jacket on a padded hanger. “Are you sure?” She unzipped her skirt.

“Yeah, I’m positive.” Missy plopped on the bed and crossed her legs. “We’ll be doin’ some work on the project during school hours, but Mrs. Bickham will be there then. It’s just at night and on Saturdays that the parents need to be there, ’cause we can’t work unsupervised. If Dad lived here, I’d ask him…” Her voice trailed off sadly.

That’s it, Missy, turn on the guilt… “Well, I guess Ic-”

“Oh, thanks, Mom!” All traces of her former sadness disappeared.

Shelley eyed her daughter thoughtfully. Had Missy purposely manipulated her into saying yes? Missy’s expression was guileless, and Shelley immediately felt guilty for suspecting her of deviousness. “Do I need to call Mrs. Bickham or anything?”

“Uh-uh. I’ll tell her.”

“And then what?” Shelley hung her skirt on a skirt hanger and began unbuttoning her blouse.

“She’ll pro’bly send you a note.”

Shelley nodded and finished undressing while Missy filled her in on what had happened at school that day. Afterwards, they both headed for the kitchen where Shelley would start dinner and Missy would work on her homework.

Later that night, Shelley thought about her promise to Missy and decided it would probably be good for her to help out with the science project. It would get her out of the house a couple evenings a week, and she’d meet some of the other parents. Plus, this would be good, quality time with Missy. Once again, she thought about Missy’s comment concerning Barry. Some of the anger she’d felt over that disastrous phone conversation the week of Missy’s birthday returned. Since that day, there had been no communication from him. Shelley had half thought he might feel bad about what he’d said and send Missy a belated card or gift. But he hadn’t, and Missy hadn’t mentioned him until today.

Shelley pressed her lips together. Yes, she was doubly glad now she was going to be working with Missy and her class on this project. She wanted Missy to know that even though she only had one active, involved parent, that parent would always be there for her. Always.
