Chapter 7

Zoe

I don't know what got into me when I replied to James that way, but I was done with him trying to tease me. My friends weren't helping either, and I was done with everyone. They all seem to think that I'm too shy to have conversations about sex, and that's not true. If they had a chance to take a peek into my mind, they would be shocked.

Especially James. Oh, if he knew the kind of things I think and dream about him . . . He would be the one blushing.

My wedding is now over, and my friends are gone. Ashley wasn't aware of what was going on, but she knows that James might stay with us for a couple of weeks. I don't expect him to stay longer than that, and for some reason I can't understand, there's a part of me that gets sad when I think about him leaving.

James asked me to meet him at Jared's office after I put Ashley to bed. I'm nervous about seeing him, afraid of what can be so important that can't wait until tomorrow.

Knocking on the door, I wait for his answer, and jump on my feet when he opens the door all of a sudden.

"Is Ashley asleep?" He asks, stepping aside to let me inside.

I nod, walking into the office, and glancing back at him, seeing him close the door, his eyes traveling down my body and taking in my shirt and shorts. I’ve changed as soon as I could from my wedding dress, but he’s still wearing his black suit that fits him just too well.

"So, I wanted to give you this," he says, walking to the desk, and taking some papers. I recognize my signature on them, and look at him surprised.

"Aren't those our wedding papers?"

He nods. "Yes, I mean, we signed them today, but I noticed you hadn't read them, so I thought it would be better for you to check on them now."

My heart shrinks as I wonder if there's something wrong. I didn't read anything because Jacob told me it was about Jared's will. Something about how our wedding made everything official. Now I regret my decision. I should know better than to trust Jacob blindly. He knew about Jared’s plan all along and didn’t tell me anything after all. That's what got me into all this.

I take the papers from James and read through everything carefully, looking for the place where it says he's screwing me over. Because that's what I'm expecting. What else could it be? He doesn't know me, but he still agreed to marry me. That's the only logical explanation.

My heart skips a beat when I see my dad's name on the papers, and the name of the hospital.

"You're paying for my dad's medical bills?" I ask, trying to make sense of what I'm reading.

He nods. "Yes. I know that's the only reason you agreed to marry me, and I don't want you to ever feel forced to anything around me.
