Chance had been lost in his thoughts more often than usual this past week. He didn’t have to wonder why, either. Most of his thoughts were on Theo when he wasn’t with him. He didn’t know what it was about Theo that pulled on his heartstrings. He was adorable, but he was also one of the strongest men Chance had ever known. He didn’t have anything, yet he still managed to give his pack everything.

Well, everything he could give them.

That wasn’t much when they were on the road. Theo had admitted he already knew most of what Chance was saying. Being a good alpha was quite easy as long as you were a good, logical person. Theo was fair, and his first goal was to protect his people. He’d do everything he could to keep them safe, and that was enough to make him a good alpha. Chance didn’t really have anything to teach him.

He’d offered it because he wanted Theo to stay, and he’d done the right thing. Some of Theo’s pack members were still wary, which was understandable, but others were settling down. The mouthy one, Wade, had been around pack territory talking to people and making friends, but Chance hadn’t missed the fact that he was poking around to find out whether or not Mayport would be a good place for him and the pack to settle down.

Things would change if they did. There could be only one alpha for every pack, which meant that either Chance or Theo would have to give up their position. It wasn’t hard to choose which one should do it. Theo had to answer for nine people, while Chance had almost a hundred. His pack members wouldn’t follow Theo, and it would be easier for nine people to get used to answering to Chance rather than the other way around.

But Chance hadn’t mentioned any of that to Theo yet. He wasn’t sure he could because he was afraid to send Theo running.

“Hard at work, I see,” Houston’s amused voice said from the open office door.

Chance had been reclined in his desk chair, staring at the ceiling rather than at his computer screen. “Did you want anything?”

“I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t.”

“Why don’t you get straight to the point then?”

Houston leaned against the doorframe, crossed his arms over his chest, and stared at Chance. “What are you hiding?”

“Why do you think I’m hiding something?”

“Come on. You can talk to me. Besides, I already know it’s Theo.”

“If you already know, why are you asking questions?”

“Because you need to talk to someone. James has a stick up his ass, so you probably shouldn’t be talking to him. But I’m here, and I understand.”

Chance was curious to find out where this would go, but he didn’t want to talk about it in his office. He had plans to meet Theo, and he didn’t want to miss out on them.

He hauled himself out of his chair. “You can listen while we walk.”

“I’m pretty sure my ears still work when my feet do, so yes.
