The sun shining through the blinds hurt Carmen’s eyes when Todd finally opened the closet door.

“Open your mouth. Come on. I ain’t got all day.”

Todd fed Carmen a few bites of a frozen pastry he had heated in the microwave. As he untied her hands, she crumbled. Todd carried her over to the bed. Carmen’s head slumped to her chest as she tried to sit upright.

“I’m late for work,” Carmen said.

“How can you be late when you no longer work there?”

“But we need money.”

“You ready to be a good girl?”

“Yeah.”

Todd used Carmen’s phone to call her job. He tried to hand her the phone, but her hands were weak and shaking and her circulation had not returned. Todd held the phone to her ear.

“Make it sound good.”

“Hello. May I talk to Mr. Shelton?” Carmen asked after someone had finally answered. “Mr. Shelton. This is Carmen. I’m sorry I didn’t call earlier, but I had a family emergency. . . . Yeah, it’s serious. It’s my mother.” She began to cry. “You know I would do this the right way if I could, but I’m flying back home. . . . Yes, this is my resignation.”

By now, Carmen was sobbing.

“I want you to know that I appreciate everything you did for me. Tell everyone I said goodbye.”

Todd ended the call.

“You appreciate everything he did for you?” he asked, drawing his hand back.

Carmen flinched.

“Oh, baby,” Todd said as he stroked Carmen’s cheek, “If you would just do what I tell you. Keep people out of our business and we wouldn’t have this problem.”

“What do you want from me, Todd?”

“ ‘What do I want from you?’ Do you know how good that sounds?” Todd turned Carmen’s face towards him. “Let me be the man in this relationship. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.”

Todd walked to the end of the dresser and held up Carmen’s accordion file for her to see.

“All your personal information – birth certificate, social security card, license – all that. I’m keeping it for you.”

Todd threw her file in his trunk and locked it. He then walked back towards the bed and stood in front of Carmen. Her eyes were blood shot as she looked at him. He held her cell phone in front of her then snapped it in half.

“What about my mother?”

“What about her?”

Carmen couldn’t stop crying.

“Relax. You show me you’re ready to be a real woman and I’ll let you talk to her . . . sometimes.”
