AARON, HENRY (1934–)

One of the greatest baseball players of all time as well as one of the first African-American major league baseball players. Aaron played twenty-three seasons from 1954 to 1976 and was ranked the fifth best player on Sporting News’s list of the 100 best major league baseball players of all time. He surpassed Babe Ruth’s home run record in 1974 by hitting his 715th career homer.

ADDAMS, JANE (1860–1935)

One of the first social workers in the United States in the early twentieth century. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. Addams worked to raise awareness for women’s rights, especially issues relating to mothers and the public health. She founded the Hull House in Chicago, which took in European immigrants when they first arrived in the country.
