Once we were safely in the hall, we saw two security guards rushing toward Compton’s offi ce.
“It’s the short, tubby one that’s causing all the trouble,” I said as they passed, hoping they’d never met Junior before.
“Well, that was fun,” Otis said as we hurried toward the main lobby. “But it doesn’t do either one of us any good.”
“Sure it does. It kept me from going to jail.” I looked around for the coffee cup guy but didn’t see him.
“I’m happy for you,” Otis said, “But what good does it do me? Without corroboration for what allegedly happened at the hospital, this is a nonstory. I’ve got a deadline in two days.”
“Fine, I’ll tell you who’ll corroborate it for you, though it probably won’t do you much good . . .”
“Who?”
“Connie Coster.”
“You’re kidding.”
“Nope. If you can talk to her, she’ll be happy to confess.”
“Great,” he said as we went through the main door into the late afternoon sun. “How do I talk to her if she’s in Mexico?”
“That’s a problem, I guess.”
“Then again,” he said as we walked toward the parking lot on Western, “she may not be.”
“What do you mean? She may not be what?”
“In Mexico. Ed Jr. and his dad could be hiding her at the Moose and Eagle Lodge.”
I started to laugh. “The what?”
“The Moose and Eagle. It’s her father-in-law’s private hunting lodge, north of Skowhegan.”

Between bouts of helpless laughter I explained about Cord’s conspiracy theory version of the Moose and Eagle Society.
“Well,” Otis said, “I suppose they could be intent on world domination, but from what I know, it’s mostly about drinking expensive scotch and killing things with guns.”
“So this lodge is owned by Ed Coster, Sr.?”
“That’s right,” he said as we got to his car, a boxy Volvo, bronze, I think. “Do you need a ride back to Camden?”
“Yeah, thanks.”
“Hop in.”
I remembered my Suburban. “Well, no, actually. I need to go down to Portland. My Suburban is in the airport parking lot.”
He stood there thinking. “The thing is, I should probably go to the airport myself. I’d like to find out if Connie Coster really went to Mexico or up to Somerset County.”
“How can you find that out in Portland?”
“I’m not just an editor, I’m a reporter, that’s how. I’ve got the flight number. If we get there before the shift change, I can talk to the boarding personnel to see if it was really her on that flight. On top of that, I know the pilot who flies Coster’s guests upstate.”
“Well, it looks like you got yourself a hitchhiker.”
