The Object of Our Worship

Turn Your Eyes upon Jesus

1. Read Luke 18:9-14.

a. To whom did Jesus tell this parable (v. 9)?

b. Who are the two main characters in this story (vv. 10-13)? Describe each one.

c. What big surprise did Jesus reveal at the end of his story (v. 14)? What kind of impact do you think that “reveal” had on Jesus’s audience?

d. What general principle does Jesus connect to his story (v. 14)?

2. Read Romans 12:3.

a. Why did Paul mention “grace” at the beginning of his thought in this verse?

b. What did Paul instruct believers not to do?

c. What did Paul instruct believers to do instead?

d. How does the apostle’s instruction relate thematically to Jesus’s parable above?

Reflect on the Book

1. “Do you ever look at people who don’t go to church and think you are better than they are, because you do go to church?”

a. Answer the question above and explain your answer.

b. What are some reasons you’ve heard for why people don’t go to church? What do you think of those answers?

2. “When you look up to God, you will never look down on others.”

a. What does it mean to look up to God?

b. When are you most tempted to look down on people? How can you combat this?

3. “You will see yourself correctly only when you see God correctly.”

a. How has your picture of God changed over the last few years?

b. Has your view of yourself changed as your picture of God has changed? Explain.

Put It into Practice

1. Write down as many reasons as you can think of for why it is foolish to compare yourself with others.

2. Whom do you tend to look down on? What kind of people do you often regard as inferior or loathsome? Spend some time in prayer asking God to forgive you and to help you change.
