Reaching Their Hearts
For those of us with children, the most beautiful legacy we can build into their hearts is to become moms who parent them from spiritually healthy souls. May you and I decide to seek the Lord personally and respond to His leading quickly. I want my kids to live with the mom God had in mind when He gave them to me.
Kids Need Their Mom…
To Believe They Will Not Grunt Forever
Hey, sugar, how’s your homework for tonight?” I cheerfully asked my 15-year-old son.
“Okay.” With that, the one-word answers began.
“And how was your history test today?” the ever-inquisitive me kept going.
“Fine.”
“And how about soccer practice—was it messy to practice in the rain this afternoon?”
Grunt.
“What did you say, honey?’
Half-grunt. My young man-child was completely out of words. He couldn’t even fake it.
I went over to where he was sitting at the kitchen counter. Put my arms around him. Straightened his hair and kissed his head. “You’re gonna come out of this fog one day,” I lovingly said as I held onto him.
“Mom, I don’t know what you’re talking about. Why do you keep saying I’m in a fog?” he asked from his growing frustration.
“Well, baby, here’s what I know. Most grown men with your IQ don’t respond to every question with ‘Huh. Yeah.’ They use complete sentences, and then there is this amazing thing called conversation. We’re going to have conversations again one day when you come out of the fog. Do you remember that your brother went into the fog about the same time as you? We should call 14 to 16 the foggy years. But your brother has come back to life, and that gives me hope. You are not going to grunt forever.”
He kept sitting there like I was the craziest person breathing, but I continued, “Baby, here’s what I have been learning about the mind of an adolescent. Neurologists say that during these years, your brain is rewiring. New connections are being formed. Your very countenance and personality are being shaped. So I’ve decided that while you’re rewiring, you need the safest, most loving home ever. You need to know that grunting does not dissuade me. My unconditional love surrounds you. You’re just walking through the brain fog, but we’re all here with you. Your family kind of misses the old happy-go-lucky kid, but we’re not going anywhere. We’ll be with you the whole way.”
