DAY 23

May my life represent You.

Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ.

EPHESIANS 5:1-2 NLT

Some days, we are our best selves—serving graciously, loving our neighbors, setting aside our preferences and annoyances to behave well. And then there are the other days.

Anyone can squeeze out a few good moments. All of us, when the mood is right or a motive is at play, can be on our best behavior. Actions can perform without heart quite well in small spurts of faithfulness, benevolence, kindness, and love. But our life has to be about more than just managing to eke out a gracious day or two. Eventually, who we really are will emerge, and we will wind up exhausted in all our trying without true soul engagement.

Good people don’t just happen. (Perfect people don’t exist.) We who desire to be loving, gracious, kind, forgiving, faithful, good neighbors, friends, and family members need only remember that Jesus Christ is the guideline to follow in our everyday lives. When we pray may my life represent You, we are saying to God, “You lived perfectly. I mess up. Please help me live like You and never dishonor Your holy name.” This prayer is music to a Father’s ears.

When we become a believer in Jesus Christ and commit to follow Him, we take on His name.* It then becomes not only our responsibility but our great joy to imitate what He does. We will never be perfect as He is, but we must always be in a posture of emulating His character and heart. We will never go wrong when we emulate Christ. To represent His life is to represent the life of perfection, one who loves and gives and serves without selfish motive or temporary bursts of kindness. Faithful is who He is. Good is His character. From the beginning of time, He has never changed and never will. To model Christ is to model a sure thing.

Let us not seek to muster up good moments to love and serve and give, but let us seek to represent Jesus Christ better, the only Perfect One who ever lived.

Oh Lord, my life is not my own…I have committed to You so I can’t make this about me but about something bigger. May my life represent You.
