Chapter 16

Toby rolled his eyes as Etienne bowed. Sheesh, the man belonged in the Middle Ages, which, after all, was when he’d been transformed.

“Mademoiselle Laura, I came not only to help as I may with this predicament, but on a commission for the esteemed Mr. Roman.”

“Really?” Toby asked, drawing out the vowels and raising a dark eyebrow. “You’re working for Vlad?”

Laura exhaled slowly. She’d have to be unconscious not to pick up the tension between the two men—okay, two vampires.

Etienne inclined his head. “I am.”

The two of them would have played “stare me out” if Adela hadn’t spoken after several pregnant seconds. “And is your commission for Mr. Roman relevant to our current worries, and Laura’s apparent, very justified concerns for her father?”

The look on his face had Laura wishing she had a camera. He obviously wasn’t big on soliciting female input. “I’d like to know that too.”

“While we’re at it,” Toby said, “I’ll admit to curiosity. Anything special you’d care to mention, Larouselière? Just in passing, like? Something, perhaps, we ought to be aware of?”

Toby spoke as smoothly and easily as ever, but no one could miss the undertone of irritation. And more. Laura bet there were a gazillion shades of vampire nuance that were lost to her. Elizabeth seemed almost amused. Maybe she understood what was going on. Adela just sat back and rested her hands in her lap.

“Larouselière?” Toby repeated, adding a definite edge in his voice.

Uh-oh! Something was going on. Would be nice to know exactly what. Besides, all this sidetracked helping Dad. It was on the tip of Laura’s tongue to make that point aloud when Etienne spoke.

“He wanted me here to examine this intruder. One unsanctioned vampire is intolerable to him. A second, totally insupportable. He wants to know their origins and reasons for trespassing. His request, madame goule—and when he arrives I am sure he will make it himself—is that you not incinerate the intruder this time.”

What! Laura’s jaw sagged as she stared from Etienne to Elizabeth. Both seemed perfectly calm, as if he’d asked her to please not park on the grass, to be careful not to slam a door. “You incinerated a vampire?” She had to ask. If it was bad etiquette, tough. “Burned him up? Cremated him? How?”

“Magic.” Elizabeth gave a little shrug and an even smaller smile. “As I said, I’m a witch. We use magic. I had help, a local coven and…another. I harnessed the energy of the full moon and it was close to the solstice.”

“And you’re going to use magic against Axel?” Sounded utterly ludicrous, but if everyone else treated this seriously, who was she to pick holes in the idea?

“If needed, yes.” She glanced at Etienne. “Any idea what Vlad has in mind? He asked me to come, pretty much bludgeoned me into it with a guilt trip over Dad, but if he wants Axel alive…”

“Yes,” Toby said, jumping in as Elizabeth paused. “Since you seem to be privy to Vlad’s plans, would you care to let us know what he has in mind?”

Etienne raised his hands and shoulders in a wide gesture.
