In Hooked, authors Joe McIlhaney, M.D., and Freda McKissic Bush, M.D., note that this neuro-chemical process that takes place in males during sexual intercourse "produces a partial bond with every woman they have sex with."19 "They do not realize that this pattern of having sex with one woman and then breaking up and then having sex with another woman limits them to experience only one form of brain activity common to humans involved sexually—the dopamine rush of sex."20 They further say, "The individual who goes from sex partner to sex partner is causing his or her brain to mold and gel so that eventually begins accepting that sexual pattern as normal. For most people this brain pattern seems to interfere with the development of the neurological circuits necessary for the long-term relationships that for most people result in stable marriages and family development."21

Given the power of oxytocin and the emotional bond it creates, it shouldn't come as a surprise that a recent study of sexually active adolescents found that both boys and girls who have had sex are three times more likely to be depressed than their friends who are still virgins. The girls who became sexually active were three times more likely to have attempted suicide as their virgin friends, while the sexually active boys were fully seven times more likely to have attempted suicide.22 I have shared with both my boys the information regarding oxytocin, and it seemed to make an impact on them. In fact, I've been known to subject some of their friends to an oxytocin tutorial from time to time. (Lucky them!) Sex outside of marriage can bring untold amounts of pain and heartache. When it comes to the emotional health of our sons, the healthiest path is to save sex for marriage.
