Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:28–30)

He invites us to come closer to him because he wants to give us something we need. He wants to give us rest. He wants to teach us his gentle and humble ways, which will bring peace to our souls. His way is so much easier and lighter than our own. And his way, his life, is all about forgiveness. So at some point, and I hope that point for you is now, you must courageously move toward giving up your resentment and begin replacing it with forgiveness.

I go back to 1 Peter 4:1 and remind myself that it is when I am ready to suffer that I am ready to stop sinning. Anything, such as a grudge, that causes me to fall short of God’s mark is sin. So I can either suffer continually in my sin, or I can suffer temporarily in the process of getting out of it and learning to forgive. When I endure the painful process of letting go of the sin of resentment, I remove the blind spot that is blocking God’s work in me. I enable myself to move away from my need to be in control and move toward allowing God’s truth to dominate my life.
