I sat down in an empty chair, and everyone smiled at me. I just listened for a while. Alright, so I wasn’t actually listening, I was thinking about my own problems, like where I was going to sleep. Besides, they were just reciting all the usual crap.

“Let go and let God.”

“It works if you work it.”

“Easy does it.”

“Keep it simple stupid.”

That last one really got on my nerves. I just sat there thinking about me, as some guy told the incredible but true story of his addiction. It sounded like a bunch of crap to me. If his addiction was so great, then what was he doing at an NA meeting? If he was such a big coke dealer, what happened to all his money? When he was finished, everyone was looking at me. The lady leading the group told me to go ahead. I hadn’t even noticed I had raised my hand! I swallowed, took a deep breath, and out it came.

“Hi, my name is Matty, and I don’t have a place to sleep. Oh, and I’m a drug addict.”

“Hello Matty!”
