Rory woke to the sweet smell of waffles and peeked out of the bedroom, seeing Quinn, in only shorts and an apron, stirring batter in a big yellow bowl with his long, sexy fingers. He looked up, sensing her, and winked.

“There’s a robe for you on the chair by the bed.”

She padded into the bathroom to freshen up before returning to a finished golden stack ready to be consumed. Quinn sat on a stool and pulled her onto his lap, so she fed him the first bite.

“It will be hard living next door. I’ll be knocking on your door, begging for breakfast.”

“Mmm, only breakfast.” He laughed and kissed her neck.

“Well … Seriously, though. These are perfect.”

“You are perfect. Still want to go to the park?”

“Um, yes, but I can’t promise that I’ll be any good at riding a bike.”

“There’s plenty to do there. Dex and Alandriel usually picnic, weather permitting. The stables are there. We could ride horses. You can ride a horse, right?”

“Of course! I’m an expert equestrian.”

“Oh, really?”

“Mmm hmm,” she hummed, getting up to rinse the dishes.

“I’ll take care of that. Why don’t you tiptoe over to your place and get into some clothes? Oh, and wear tennis shoes.”

She looked puzzled.

“They have laces, thick soles made for sport, walking, running … You know what? I’ll be over in twenty minutes to help.”

In her own room, Rory jumped in the shower, then ran coconut oil through her hair before tying it back. She picked out a cotton bra and panties but sat on the edge of the bed with a T-shirt in hand, contemplating what would be appropriate.

Quinn entered her room in long black shorts and a white tee. “Hi.”

She raised her hand, questioning her decisions so far.

He pointed at it. “Yes, and …” He went into her closet and pulled out blue shorts, socks, and the laced tennis shoes.

She dressed, and Quinn hugged her from behind, smelling her ponytail as they left her apartment.

The sun was shining bright, and the park teemed with halves and humans. More halves than Rory had ever seen all in one place, still outnumbered by humans, of course. Every couple was human with human, half with half. She and Quinn were the only mismatched pair, but she knew Quinn didn’t care what others would think. They waved at Dex and Alandriel, who were stretched out on a blanket reading. Rory could see the gorgeous white stables. She had always loved the smell of a barn. The hay. The horses.

She nudged Quinn’s arm in that direction. “Can we?”

“Of course.”

She immediately recognized a large black stallion in the first stall, and he seemed to recognize her as he stuck his head over the half door for a nose rub.

“Oh, hi friend. Hello, beautiful Toby.”

“Oh, yeah. You know this big boy.” Quinn scratched behind the horse’s ear.

A stable hand spoke up. “Ma’am, do you know this horse? He really needs a run, but he won’t let just anyone ride him.”

“Oh, um, I’m not sure the major general would want me to.
