CHAPTER 5

Complaining to God

He served his master, though with complaint.

He wasn’t a plaster sort of saint.

— Phyllis McGinley, on St. Jerome

The biggest book of the Bible is the book of Psalms, the prayer book of the people of God. It’s filled with hymns for every occasion — for liturgies, for private devotions, for all the joys and sorrows that human life is filled with.

And as long as we’re quoting statistics, here’s another statistic that most of us don’t think about: More than forty percent of the Psalms are songs of “complaint” or lament. That’s getting up pretty close to half.

That surprises us. More than that, it dumbfounds us. Who would dare to complain to God?

Actually, complaining to God is one of the privileges of being God’s children. But we have to understand the difference between complaining and grumbling.

Grumbling is what the Israelites did in the wilderness. They complained about God, not to God. In fact, they were ready to fire him and get themselves a god they liked better — that’s why they had Aaron build them a golden calf.
