Day 17

Fear of Losing a Loved One

“For the thing I greatly feared has come upon me, And what I dreaded has happened to me.”

JOB 3:25

If you were a godly parent with ten children who loved to party, it would only be natural to be concerned about their relationship with the Almighty. Meet Job. He was a righteous rich man. He owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants.

Despite his holdings, his primary concern was that his children might one day offend God with their partying and suffer His wrath. Job’s anxiety led him to offer sacrifices to God on his children’s behalf to “purify” them after each time of feasting. “Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, ‘Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.’ This was Job’s regular custom” (Job 1:5 NIV).

One day, all hell broke loose. Three different messengers brought successive news reports that raiders and fire from heaven had wiped out all Job’s livestock as well as the attending servants. The fourth messenger brought the most dreaded news. The oldest son’s house, where his children had been feasting, had collapsed during a fierce windstorm. None of them had escaped. Seven sons… three daughters…all gone in one day. Job would later lament, “For the thing I greatly feared has come upon me, and what I dreaded has happened to me” (Job 3:25).
