Fifty yards beyond my camp, and the tip of the island, toward the windward side, is where I chose to bury Ben. There was a break in the foliage and a view over the ocean. I wasn’t sure Ben would want his eternal resting place overlooking the water that killed him, but it was a peaceful spot, and it was beautiful.

I dug his grave and placed him in it. The ground was soft, and it didn't take long, but I was covered in sweat and grime by the time I finished. Sitting in the stream I rinsed off then walked back to the grave. I'd make a marker of some kind so that he could be identified later if something happened to me.

I work in the music industry, and while I’m not a professional singer, I can carry a tune. I sent him off with a chorus of Amazing Grace, because his story was pretty amazing:

“When we’ve been here ten thousand years,

Bright shining as the sun,

We’ve no less days to sing his praise,

Than when we first begun,

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me

I once was lost but now I’m found

Was blind but now I see.”

I was silent for a moment. I stood and absorbed the stillness of the sea and the whisper of the wind, the sun shining down, time passing us by.

“Vaya con Dios, Ben," I said and turned for the camp.
