M

Eleven p.m.

Twilight had now given way to darkness, the sky a perfect contrast to the glittering lights of Paris.

Mira took in the stellar view from her own little corner of the boat deck, but all the while, the wheels in her brain kept spinning in a steady rotation.

It had only been twelve hours since Mira had received the stressful news that she’d missed her flight back home. That unexpected event had been associated with everything negative—inconvenience, anxiety, and even a dreadful feeling of financial doom.

Since then, her day had taken on a different set of qualities—laughter, delight, human connection, flirting, even a fluttering stomach butterfly or two. That last one was the most surprising, as Mira had assumed that any lingering butterflies had long since moved on to more hopeful settings.

And then there was the sunset. Jake had almost kissed her, and she’d finally been ready. But Colette had come along and ruined it all.

Mira had given Sophie a quick rundown of the debacle, and the theme of her replies had been clear: to buckle up and have some fun with the hot bartender.

Maybe Sophie was right, but it was hard to focus on the hot guy at hand when he was off getting another drink. His absence left Mira searching for meaning in this unexpected day with Jake.

Maybe the day had happened to remind her of what was out there, a way to prepare her for that future moment when she’d be ready to take the plunge. But did a helpful reminder have to include watching Jake get pawed at by a sexy Frenchwoman?

Or maybe today’s purpose had been to form a bond with Jake, so that later, on some rainy afternoon in Manhattan, they could passionately reunite.

Or, more simply, maybe the universe was absolute chaos, with human-shaped collections of buzzing atoms routinely colliding for no reason at all.

She immediately decided it was the colliding atoms thing, since the logical explanation was usually the right one.

And so, Mira did her best to get used to the idea of chaos, like the absolute lawlessness of grabbing Jake’s hand and hoping they would kiss while he was literally on a date with someone else.

Dare to dream.

“Are you a friend of Colette’s?” said the voice of a Frenchwoman.

Mira absorbed the ridiculous question and spun around, now face to face with a young woman, whose short brown hair ended sharply at her chin. The woman wore black-framed glasses, and one of those outfits that would’ve looked unflattering on anyone who wasn’t stick thin: a cropped T-shirt, mom jeans, and shiny black loafers.

“I don’t know her,” Mira said, channeling the famous Mariah Carey GIF, and hoping her definitive words would make Colette disappear into the ether.

“Oh. I was confused because . . .” The woman gestured to the starboard side of the vessel, where Jake and Colette were busy drinking and laughing. “You are with the American, no?”

“What?” Mira scoffed. “I’m not with him; we’re completely independent organisms. Or whatever.”

“Maybe my English is not right,” the woman said.
