I then opened a new Curves layer so that I could make a minor adjustment to the tones. This adjustment lightened the stormy clouds too much so I clicked in the layer mask thumbnail (the white rectangle in the Curves 1 layer) and then, with the black rectangle on top at the bottom of the toolbar, brushed over the clouds with the brush’s opacity set at 25% to return them to their darker colour.

Minor adjustments made in the Curves layer

And, that is that. For me, almost. When I was sloshing around in chemicals in the darkroom I often bathed the finished print in a weak solution of Selenium toner to produce the blacks that really were a rich black. In this digital age, I have settled on using the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to simulate as closely as I can the selenium effect. As the last adjustment before flattening the image and sharpening, I make sure that the mode is RGB and then select the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer (click on the black/white circle) and select the ‘Colorize’ box at the bottom of the dialogue box and then adjust ‘Hue’ to 220 and ‘Saturation’ to 11. I have saved these adjustments as ‘Selenium’ and do tweak them slightly occasionally.

I applied the selenium to the image I have been using as an illustration but decided that the effect could be toned down a little so reduced the opacity of the Hue/Saturation layer to 75%.
