No Wilderness, No Promised Land

There is no shortcut to wholeness: if you want to reach the Promised Land you must first go through the wilderness.5

God promised a wonderful land to His chosen people, the freed Hebrew slaves who escaped the tyranny of Egypt and Pharaoh. But they could not simply leave Egypt and be in the Promised Land. No. Instead, they had to first travel through the rugged wilderness.

So it is with us. God promises us rich blessings, such as greater power (2 Corinthians 12:7–10), deeper holiness (Hebrews 12:5–11), and more fruit (John 15:1–8), but only after we have gone through the wilderness of suffering. The wilderness is often dark, frequently scary, and always difficult. But as Tim Hansel says, “The only way out is through. It takes courage, tenacity, stamina, patience, God’s immense grace, and time…there is no such thing as an up without a down.”6

I don’t know what wilderness you are facing, but I encourage you to keep going through it, because the promised land waits on the other side.
