“We are to believe that because you died by a vampire’s hand, you exact revenge on their kind? ” Romeo asked. The guy didn’t talk much, but he got to the point when he opened his pie hole.

“More or less. ” Carpenter leaned against the windows. “I got a question about that, ” Parker said. “You tell us a vampire killed you for being a snitch? You saying there are vampires in the Mafia? ”

Carpenter directed a glare at Parker that was as dark and cold as space... Yeah, I guess you could say there are bloodsuckers in the Syndicate. I never noticed them before that night, but I’m sure the families deal with them. Whether or not they know what the things really are, I dunno. But there are some pretty fucked up people in the organization. I bet most of them wouldn’t give a shit. "

“Hang on, ” Parker said when it was clear Carpenter was about to move on. “I got something else doesn’t make sense. You said this all happened after Capone was released from prison? That was, what? In 1939? Didn’t Lupe tell us you bought it, like, five years earlier? ”

Carpenter was surprised they’d talked to that cab driver dame. He’d first considered using her for his little plan, but their last meeting had made him unaccountably nervous about her. He felt better about his chances with this crew. “I’m telling you what happened, pal. How the fuck I know what somebody told you? Maybe she got the year wrong. ” Parker was shaking his head, sure he was onto something. “I don’t buy it. I mean, come on. You turn state’s evidence on A1 Capone and you only rated a footnote in The Chicago Mob? We’re supposed to believe you’re some hot shit hired killer who Capone personally has rubbed out — and by a vampire, no less? What’s the deal with that? ”

“Pay attention, buddy, " Carpenter replied, ticking points off on his fingers. “First, I said the Feds wanted me to squeal. I never gave them anything and then they had dick to hold over me. The Untouchables were tight-lipped about everything. Those fucking Boy Scouts must never have breathed a word of it, so nobody ever knew about it to publish. I bet there were other guys pressured like that, too, and you never heard their stories either. The skinny never led anywhere anyway, so who cares, right?

“Second, Capone ordered hits all the time. Most of the time the Syndicate big boys met to give the go ahead, even. It was a business; couldn’t just have some pissed off lieutenant taking somebody down. And I have no idea if the fucker knew the guy he sent was a bloodsucker. Probably, considering Johnny knew. But that ain’t nothing new. They’ve been working with the living since forever. ”

He folded his index finger back down, flipping Parker off while he made his final point. “And third. ‘Third’ is that it doesn’t matter.
