Graham Nash: We drove down to London from Manchester in the van to record a BBC radio spot somewhere near the end of May 1963. It was live; there was no, “Sorry, I fucked up the verse, can we do it again?” It was, “You’re on live now. Now!”

We stayed in a room that had seven beds in it—we didn’t have money then, and the BBC didn’t put you up. Parlophone had signed us.

We only stayed about three days. We were recording in Abbey Road. There was a three-hour morning session and a three-hour afternoon session with tea breaks. At the end of the session a lady would come out with a tray of tea and little packets of money in it. You actually got money, a wage packet, from Abbey Road. It was a favorite thing of our time—we would make music, then get tea and be paid for it.

At Abbey Road, all the engineers had work coats on and everything was sanitized. It was insane to be in Abbey Road and actually record. We recorded our first hit song in our first recording session there. Actually, we recorded the entire album.
