We passed by smoking ruins of villages completely shot to pieces. No stone was left on top of the other. Corpses both human and horse were still lying around in huge numbers, you could see the wounded through the shot-out windows – friend and foe all a-jumble – lying on the straw, moaning.

And at Maubeuge on 28 August:

The few monks and scholars left behind are scarily friendly. It is well known that the catholic clergy organised the Francs-Tireur war by the Belgian population. There were quite a few of this Jesuit riff-raff which were put against a wall and shot.38
