On one occasion – but only one – some tuns of wine arrive ‘without escort and without accident’ for 3rd Cavalry Corps from Moscow. And here’s a really big surprise for Surgeon Heinrich von Roos and his 3rd Württemberger Chasseurs, in the nearby village of Teterinka, occupied by Sébastiani’s light cavalry division. At the campaign’s outset huge herds of sheep and cattle, prodded on across Europe – some from as far afield as Italy and Hungary – by ‘frighteningly inexperienced drovers’, had accompanied the regiments; but of course had immediately fallen far behind. Now, all of a sudden, the Württemberg chasseurs and Prussian lancer units are rejoined by

‘the remains of herds of cattle, cows and sheep we’d assembled at the Niémen. I can leave it to your imagination what state these beasts were in. But they were no less welcome for that.’
