Home Cooking
“If it pleases the king,” replied Esther, “let the king, together with Haman, come today to a banquet I have prepared for him.” “Bring Haman at once,” the king said, “so that we may do what Esther asks.” So the king and Haman went to the banquet Esther had prepared (Esther 5:4-5).
Men are complaining, ladies. Women don’t cook anymore, and they want to know why. Many of us are from the last generation who had mothers who cooked on a regular basis. The smell of a home-cooked meal signaled that someone you loved was waiting for you. It made you look forward to tasting what they had prepared. The kitchen was a place of security for most as children. It was the place you could always find the one who loved you unconditionally. Who nurtured you at the end of a long day. Men expect us to know how to care for them, especially by feeding and nurturing their bodies with stick-to-the-ribs fare.
I can tell you as a witness—there is truth to the rumor that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. So be careful whom you cook for. Just kidding! If a queen, as in Esther, could get her husband king to drop affairs of state and run off to a banquet that she had prepared for him, just think what you can accomplish with a good meal. The meal that Esther prepared for the king inspired him to come to her aid and defend her very life.
Something happens when you serve someone food made with your own hands. It is not just an expression of servanthood—it is an impartation of your spirit to theirs. They are aware of the effort taken to do a special service just for them. As the food warms their inner man, it also warms their heart toward you. For further insight on this topic, I highly recommend God Is in the Kitchen Too by P.B. Wilson. In the meantime, don’t feel condemned over this issue. It is normal not to enjoy something you don’t understand, like cooking, or feel uncomfortable doing it because you lack the needed knowledge. Here is my suggestion: When you taste something you like, ask the person who prepared it to show you how they made it. A repertoire of seven simple meals is all you need to get you started on your culinary way.
Remember, the dinner table is a place of offering, communion, and fellowship. It is through fellowship that secrets are whispered and intimacy is deepened. It is the place where heartfelt emotions are revealed, positive changes are made, and commitments are birthed. The smell of cooking will lead a man home. So turn up the flame, girl!
There is no sight on earth more appealing than the sight of a woman making dinner for someone she loves.
