The Things He Does Right

Tell your man specifically what he’s getting right in your relationship.

There are times when your husband feels like he isn’t getting anything right. People at work are crabby, your kids are crabby, and maybe, just maybe, you’re not having the best day ever.

All of this is contributing to the feeling that he’s gotten it all wrong and continues to, and the chances of actually getting it right in the future? Slim to none. So it may be time to pull out the list-making skills that most of us women have.

“OK, so my hubby was feeling super bad about himself and told me that he felt like a failure at work and at home. We had a small fight, and during our fight he said, ‘I just feel like I don’t do anything right!’ I felt horrible about it, and so the next morning, I emailed him at work and wrote for the subject line ‘Things you got right.’ And then I listed at least twenty things he does right all the time. Some of them were big deals and some of them not. Here’s a selection of the things I wrote:

• during our late-night hot-tub talks, we shared our hopes, dreams, thoughts, and fears

• you attended every prenatal appointment

• you tickle the girls and make us all laugh

• you surprise me with flowers for no reason

• you cook a wonderful meal

• you kindly teach me things and not make me feel stupid

• you spent every night in hospital knowing how scared I was

• you remind me all the time that you love me

• you call and remember your mum, dad, grandma, and brothers

• you ask me what my favorite part of the day was

• you encourage me to do things I really want to but you’re not sure about

• you go shopping with me and find better clothes for me than I do

“It made such a huge impression on him. He said he teared up at work and saved it as an important email so it showed up every morning. Then he talked about it later. That small thing made a huge impact that day and for many days to come.”—Sherri Smetana

Here are some ways to share your list with your hubby:

• Send him one statement a day about something he did right.

• Like Sherri, send him one giant list that he can refer to over and over again.

• Post the list on your fridge or inside the garage so he’ll see it every day when he leaves and gets home from work.
