PMP to Bario Kelabit (Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo)

1. The voiced aspirates of Bario Kelabit continue earlier geminates that resulted from two mechanisms, as follows:

Gemination after stressed schwa: 1, 3, 6, 8, 9, 11, 20, 24, 26

Assimilation of medial consonant clusters: 10, 12, 18, 26, 33

Note that where gemination is fully predictable after stressed schwa in the contemporary language it is left unmarked, as with /tluh/([tl:uh]) ‘three’ or /ppag/ ([pp:ag]) ‘slap’, and that either gemination after stressed schwa or assimilation of medial consonant clusters could have played a part in some forms.

2. PMP *l became /r/ in Bario Kelabit if followed by /r/ in the next syllable; otherwise it remained a lateral:
