52. Making Your Health a Priority

If anything is sacred the human body is sacred.—Walt Whitman

As my dear mother used to advise when I turned my nose up at peas, “What you eat today is what you think tomorrow.” And if that wasn’t enough, my father would back her up with, “You don’t live to eat, you eat to live!”

Take care of yourself and eat as healthily as you can. The stress of taking care of a family, dog, house, work, and the bills that keep multiplying is taxing enough. Now you have taken on the added stress of trying to write a book. Like raising children, parenting a book has its rewards, but it’s not easy. Get every edge you can and hold onto it tightly. Vegetables will help strengthen your grip.

MICHAEL BRACKEN While I would never be confused with a physical fitness freak, I’ve found that maintaining good health is important. I’ve changed my diet to incorporate more fruits and vegetables, and I reduced the amount of carbonated, caffeinated, and sugary drinks I consume. I keep two sets of handweights next to my chair—one set of eight-pound weights and one set of fifteen-pound weights—and I lift them during writing lulls.

JAMES F. MURPHY JR. Health should be a top priority for a writer. Especially no alcohol—write clear-headed. I remember once I had one beer before writing, and it positively took that glorious edge off. The flow was gone.
