CREATIVE FEEDER AND WATERER IDEAS

An empty egg carton makes a simple chick feeder. Simply cut off the top of the carton and fill the bottom with chick feed. Your chicks will enjoy lining up for a quick bite to eat. Have only a few chicks? Cut the bottom in half so you have just 6 feed compartments. Toss the carton when it gets dirty.

A small-terra cotta planter base also makes a nice feeder for just a few chicks. The terra-cotta material will naturally wick away moisture from the feed to keep it dry.

For a waterer, use food-safe, waterproof sealant to glue the ring of a wide-mouth Mason jar to the lid—with the top inverted. Glue another ring to the underside of the first ring for a bit more height. Let the glue dry completely and then fill it with water. (Don’t forget to add a few small stones so your chicks don’t accidentally fall into the water and and drown.) Chicks are attracted to shiny things, so the metal and wet stones will encourage them to drink more water. Better yet, make a few for your brooder so if one tips over or gets dirty, your chicks have an alternative source of clean water.

If plastic doesn’t bother you, start saving your take-out containers when you’re expecting chicks. These containers can be used as feeders, waterers, and even for a small dust bath. If you add apple cider vinegar to your chicks’ water a few times a week—I recommend just a few drops to get them used to the taste—you’ll want to use plastic water dishes those days. Vinegar will rust metal.
