New Delhi
New Delhi became the capital of India in 1911 - prior to this the seat of the British Raj was in Calcutta. However the city was not officially called New Delhi until 1927.
It is home to over 21 million people, making it one of the largest cities in the world.
If you fly into New Delhi, you will most likely arrive at Indira Gandhi International, the city’s - and the country’s - busiest airport.
The city is home to stunning landmarks, fascinating museums and extraordinary religious buildings, and is a very popular tourist destination.
Sadly, the air climate of New Delhi is considered to amongst the worst in the world - something scientists blame on exhaust gas from road vehicles in the city.
Despite this however, around one fifth of the city is covered with parks and trees, making it one of the ‘greenest’ cities on earth!
Attempts are being made by the government to improve the city environmentally; for instance the public transport system runs entirely on compressed natural gas - a more environmentally friendly alternative to petrol.
The walled city of Old Delhi originally had fourteen gates; five of these are still standing and are very much worth visiting.
At Khari Baoli you will find the world’s largest wholesale spice market, often overwhelming visitors with its incredible range of aromas.
It is fairly common to get about in New Delhi by jumping onto an ‘auto’ - a three-wheeled automated rickshaw that often weaves between the city’s busy traffic in a death-defying manner.
