Are demons assigned to certain geographic areas?

Daniel 10 could be called the original Angels and Demons. It describes a scene of cosmic warfare between good angels and evil angels. In this gripping account, a good angel comes to comfort Daniel and convey a message to him. The angel delivers an answer to prayer and explains what was happening behind the seen.

Then he said to me, “Do not be afraid, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart on understanding this and on humbling yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to your words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia was withstanding me for twenty-one days; then behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left there with the kings of Persia…”

Then he said, “Do you understand why I came to you? But I shall now return to fight against the prince of Persia; so I am going forth, and behold, the prince of Greece is about to come. However, I will tell you what is inscribed in the writing of truth. Yet there is no one who stands firmly with me against these forces except Michael your prince” (Daniel 10:12-13,20-21).

The “prince of the kingdom of Persia” is a demon who was engaging in cosmic combat with the good angels who were trying to bring Daniel the answer to his prayer. Verse 20 mentions another demon, “the prince of Greece.” The battle was so strenuous that Michael the archangel had to come help the angel in this conflict. The princes of Persia and Greece were demonic princes established over these respective nations. They were influencing these governments to oppose and hinder the nation of Israel, which was the topic of the visions Daniel received. In this sense, these demons were assigned, at least temporarily, to influence these particular nations and their leaders. This is part of the organized satanic hierarchy that encompasses the earth, as Donald Gray Barnhouse explains.

The display of the forces of Satan, as recorded by Daniel, leads us to believe that the entire globe is organized under principalities, corresponding to earthly governments. If there is a Prince of Persia and a Prince of Greece, we may not be astonished if there is a Prince of Russia or a Prince of India, a Prince of Britain and a Prince of the United States. This is not mere conjecture for it is bluntly stated that earth government is in the hands of Satan…Satan may even have corporals in charge of municipal affairs.1

Although Satan’s organization includes geographical areas, this is a far cry from the contemporary notion of “territorial spirits” that has been popularized in recent years. This topic of territorial spirits and cosmic-level spiritual warfare will be addressed further in question 87.
