New York on an Old Map

The New York Subway

New York City has 842 miles of subway track.

This makes it the largest mass transit system in the world.

At the time of writing, there are 468 operational stations on the subway network.

Whereas other subway systems (such as the London Underground) shut overnight, New York’s runs 24 hours a day.

Every day, 4.3 million people ride the subway.

You might be surprised to know that 40% of the ‘subway’ system is actually above ground!

New York’s very first subway was opened in 1904 - it had 28 stations and ran from City Hall to 145 th Street and Broadway. In those days it cost 5 cents a ticket.

To gain a licence to play in the subway system, musicians have to go through a talent-show style audition process!

There are a great number of disused and hidden stations on the subway network, including a beautiful one beneath City Hall which was abandoned in 1946.

The system’s deepest station is 191 st Street, which sits around 55m below street level.
