Mount Washington acts as a backdrop to the cinder-strewn landscape of Black Crater.

The views from Black Crater’s high point are superb, stretching north to Mount Hood, south to Broken Top, and east to the vast deserts of southeastern Oregon. The stars of the show, however, are the Three Sisters, or “Faith, Hope, and Charity,” as the early settlers called them. In addition to those virtues, the trio possesses beauty in abundance. Middle Sister is just barely visible from this angle, shyly peeking over her northern sibling’s shoulder.

After absorbing the scenic beauty, spend an hour or so studying the diverse landscape. In addition to the volcanic features mentioned above, your geologist companion will note how ice age glaciers carved an impressively deep gash in Black Crater’s northeastern flank just below the summit. The trail dead-ends here, so return the way you came.
