Work on Projects Based on Your Strengths

“Seek work in line with your aptitude.’’ (Author of the Book)

“Retool if you find it difficult to change your job to match your strengths.’’ (Author of the Book)

Introduction

To pursue a career and to work on projects in line with one’s aptitude is a sure-fire approach to success and glory. Working against your aptitude is like swimming against the tide. It is critical to discover one’s natural bent and make every effort to align one’s career with it. It is a pity that in many societies this endeavour is not made. This is a colossal loss at both individual and national level. Let your children decide what they want to do in life. You could surely offer some guidance and even seek professional career counselling but the intent should always be to let the person decide what he wants to do in life. Providing such leverage to the person will relieve unnecessary pressure on him and will help him soon discover his forte. You get a head start if the profession or career is built on your natural abilities and strengths. Moreover, building on your strengths gives you a wide canvas on which to show your true colours. You progress in leaps and bounds and reach your true potential. No wonder, modern societies have devised educational systems where a basic level of education is made compulsory, but further education is made contingent on student’s ability to pursue university education or vocational training. This ensures prudent deployment of state funding and development of a workforce that collectively helps in a more effective and efficient approach to nation building. At an individual level, whatever profession a person adopts is based on his or her choice. As the individual makes this choice with the help of professional counselling the chances for a wholesome, successful career are high. This approach mitigates the ill effects of problems such as unemployment, underemployment, demand and supply distortions for certain professions, and a de-motivated workforce.

Linkage with Motivation

Job enrichment is the key. The essence of job motivation is working in line with one’s aptitude in an environment characterised by empowerment, support, guidance, appreciation, and a sense of purpose. According to a leading motivation theorist, Frederick Herzberg, the drivers of motivation are intrinsic (inherent in the work) which he terms as ‘motivational factors’ in his two-factor theory of motivation. The other factors are termed as ‘hygiene factors’. According to Frederick Herzberg, hygiene factors are those job factors that are essential for motivation at workplace. However, these factors do not lead to employee satisfaction in the long-term. But if these factors are absent then they lead to dissatisfaction. Hygiene factors include job security, pay, fringe benefits, company policies, and physical working conditions. The motivational factors include meaningfulness of the work (the work should be meaningful, interesting, and challenging for the employee to perform well and get motivated), recognition, sense of achievement, growth and promotional opportunities, and responsibility. Note that the focus of Frederick Herzberg’s two-factor theory
