CHAPTER 5
Getting Practical: Building
wxPIM
Over the previous four chapters, you have surveyed the Webix landscape and gotten familiar with many of its concepts. You’ve gained a familiarity with what the library has to offer and seen how to put most of its widgets to use, at least in very simplistic examples.
With that knowledge in hand, it’s time to take the next step, which is to build an application with Webix to learn how it all fits together. I’ll break this exercise down into a couple of steps spread across a couple of chapters, but this chapter will be key in that you’ll actually build the application in its basic form. You’ll then expand on it in subsequent chapters, but you need to build the foundation first.
Of course, as with building a house, it’s hard to build something if you don’t have an idea of what it’s supposed to look like in the end, so let’s begin by discussing what this wxPIM application is all about.
First Things First: What’s a PIM, and What’s wxPIM?
The term PIM was made popular back in the days of the original PalmPilot devices, though it existed before then. PIM stands for “personal information manager” (or
“management,” depending on who you ask) and is basically a fancy way to say an
application (or device, in the case of the PalmPilot) that stores some basic information that most busy, modern people need to know and allows it to be consumed easily.
Before the electronics age, you might have a little notepad with tabs for various bits of information, but it all amounts to about the same thing either way. What data constitutes a PIM can vary, but for most people, there are four basic pieces of information: appointments, contacts, notes, and tasks. There can be others, and there can even be some overlap between those four, but those are generally considered to be the basics, and they are exactly what wxPIM will contain.
