Chapter Six

Rule #10 – Oh, you were worried you’d get rejected. I see! That’s why you were blocking...

Oopsie, my bad. Misunderstood the goal. Welp, there’s always tomorrow, right?

Henri

HENRI HAD DEALT WITH rejection before, but usually it was on a professional rather than personal level. While a lot of her contemporaries were experimenting with relationships, she’d kept her nose buried in books, preferring her academic accomplishments to those in the bedroom.

Sadly, this truth left her woefully unprepared for Gannon’s rejection. She should’ve expected it—she’d lied to him, been accepted into his home and into the life of his child, yet she’d abused his trust by using him in an attempt to accomplish what?

A degree. Like some piece of paper and academic acclaim could be valued greater than the trust of another person. Her chest ached, and she couldn’t stop thinking she’d just lost something that could’ve been special.

His touch, after all, made her magic come to life. With a glance, he made her feel feminine and desirable. She’d never experienced anything like it nor really believed it possible... until Gannon, that was.

Sniffling, she sat in the grass and tried to decide what to do next. Clearly, she didn’t have enough evidence to support her thesis, even if she had learned a few valuable tidbits in her time with the Taradiddle-Wilson family, but she wasn’t sure that mattered anymore.

She cared about them, about their lives, and if her paper risked their privacy, it seemed wrong to pursue it.

On the other hand, the information she’d gathered through her research about their curse was invaluable. Who knew what the family could do, if they simply realized their curses were, in fact, reversable? Sure, the price was high, but shouldn’t they know all the facts so they could better make decisions for themselves.

Standing, she brushed grass off her behind and zapped herself back to the home of Jackie Wilson, Besnik’s daughter and the one who’d hired her in the first place. If Gannon didn’t want to hear her out—because she was a witch, not that she had a choice in the matter—then perhaps other members of his family would be more receptive.

Knocking on the door, she was surprised when an older witch answered the door. Besnik Taradiddle Wilson had aged gracefully, but she had aged. Soft wrinkles lined what could’ve been a flawless witch face, but her eyes still carried the spark of the witch she’d been before she gave up her powers. Henri could see her son in her somewhat weathered face, which inexplicably had her near tears before she could even say hello.

“Now, what’s all the fuss about, child?” the older witch asked, tugging Henrietta into her arms in what could best be described as a bear hug. “You’re Emmie’s nanny, aren’t you?”

“And special friend, from what I’ve heard,” Jackie said from behind her mother.

“Hush, you,” said Besnik, not releasing Henri. “She’s clearly upset, and you’ve got your nose so far in the air, you’d drown in a rainstorm.”

Jackie sighed, but Henri found herself seated again on the large, comfortable couch across from the two other witches.
