8. ENTER THE BOERS

The arrival of the Europeans and their quest for land added a new dimension to the Mfecane. Their intrusion into southern Africa was akin to prodding an already angry bull in the belly with a red-hot poker. First it was the Portuguese who landed in 1486 but found the reception by the Khoikhoi to be so hostile that in 1507 King Manuel of Portugal issued an edict that no Portuguese ships were to stop off at the Cape but rather to anchor off Mozambique, which was considered less dangerous. Because of the perceived danger the Portuguese lost interest in the southern tip of Africa and ultimately colonized Angola and Mozambique, respectively on the west and east coasts of Africa, leaving the Cape open for the arrival of the Dutch.
