I moved rapidly and swiped the knife across the front of his shoulder with such accuracy that the material of his dishdasha opened up, leaving no mark on his skin. He had let out a muffled cry from behind the gag and immediately looked down at his exposed shoulder.
“Ishmael, you have information I need! However, you are expendable in my pursuit of Kaffeel. Let me explain the rules of this game. I ask a question and you answer it truthfully - if I detect you are lying then I cut you, not enough to kill you but enough for you to suffer. And by the way I am good at detecting lies. Do you understand?”
Ishmael did not respond for several seconds and then nodded his head.
“I will remove the gag, and if you cry out I will kill you here and now and pursue Kaffeel by other means.”
I walked around to the rear of the chair and slipped the gag down from his mouth, leaving it around his neck before returning to face him.
“Before I ask my first question I will give you a few minutes to settle down and relax. Now open your mouth and take a drink of water.”
I needed him to be relaxed and settled in order for me to detect any lies he might tell me, by observing discreet facial and body expressions especially the eyes that indicate when a person is lying.
I had a vast amount of experience in this area and - without boasting - I am very good at detecting when a person is lying to me.
For this reason, it is important that any observation of a person suspected of lying involves me drawing together a ‘cluster’ of deceptive behaviours and responses, as there is no single ‘aha!’ sign.
“Now I want you to answer the next three questions with either a Yes or a No. Is your name Ishmael Nader?”
“Yes.”
“The scar on your face is from a childhood accident - is that correct?”
“No.”
“Was it inflicted when you attempted to rob someone?”
“Yes.”
“Okay you are doing well, Ishmael. Can I get you another drink of water?”
He nodded and I went back to the refrigerator and grabbed another bottle. The three questions I had used were to establish a base line in reading him. From my experience and training in interrogation matters I’d learnt that people usually answer basic questions about themselves truthfully.
Checking for a baseline might also include asking the person about something to which you already know the answer, hence the second question about his scar.
I had given him some praise and offered the water to establish some rapport with him.
I opened the bottle and placed it to his mouth and he took several gulps.
“Now I will ask you some more questions. Remember if I detect you are lying I will cut you. Now where is Kaffeel?”
“He is not in the country - he left a few days ago, I don’t know when he will return.
